Top 3 Carpets for Bedrooms

Choosing carpeting for a bedroom is a unique process. There are certain things you must consider -- like warmth and sound absorption -- that may not be as important for other rooms in your home. Below we'll discuss the top three carpets for bedrooms:

Wool

SF Gate recommends investing in wool carpeting for bedrooms, because it "has a soft, luxurious feel." This natural fiber is also durable, stain-resistant, and fire retardant. Wool carpets may be more expensive than alternatives, but initial costs are often offset by their durability and ease of care. JCB Interiors offers wool and wool-blend carpet at competitive prices.

Silk/wool blend

Another popular choice, according to HGTV, is a silk and wool blend. It's not only durable, but also quite beautiful! However, be careful how you clean this type of carpet. It can easily be damaged if you don't follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Synthetic

If silk and wool are out of your price range, synthetic materials -- like nylon -- are a good option. One benefit of synthetic carpets is that they do not attract as many insects. Synthetic carpeting is also easy to care for, making it ideal for children's bedrooms.

Luxury Vinyl Plank vs. Hardwood Flooring

Luxury vinyl plank is often touted as a more affordable alternative to hardwood flooring. And while that certainly is true to an extent, there are some major differences between the two that should be noted. If you're having trouble deciding between luxury vinyl plank and hardwood flooring, keep reading.

There are a number of reasons you might want to invest in luxury vinyl plank as opposed to hardwood floors. Below are some of the pros of luxury vinyl plank:
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to install
  • Low maintenance
  • Easy to clean
Still, there are unique benefits that you'll find with hardwood flooring. Here are some pros of hardwood floors:
  • Beautiful, natural appearance
  • Durable
  • Can be sanded and re-finished if damaged
  • Collects less dust and debris
However, there are downsides to both flooring types. Cons of luxury vinyl plank include:
  • Doesn't look as natural as hardwood floors
  • Can't be re-finished
  • Poor resale value
  • Less comfortable; hard and cold
And, of course, hardwood flooring isn't perfect either. Keep the following cons of hardwood floors in mind:
  • Expensive
  • Difficult to install
  • More susceptible to damage
  • Cannot withstand spills and moisture
That's a lot to take in. If you have any additional questions about luxury vinyl plank vs. hardwood flooring, contact us today! JCB Interiors has been serving Connecticut and New York for more than 25 years. Get in touch by dialing (203) 327-0450.

3 Tips for Caring for Hardwood Floors

Hardwood flooring is unique because it can't be mopped with water like most other floors can. So if you've recently invested in new hardwood floors, you might be wondering how to clean them without ruining them. Let's go over three tips for caring for hardwood floors:

1. Anderson Floors, a manufacturer for JCB Interiors, recommends sweeping and vacuuming regularly. Doing so will help remove dirt that builds up over time. It's important to remove the grit as often as possible, because, otherwise, it could damage the surface of your hardwood floors.

2. Prevent scuffs and marks by placing floor protectors underneath your furniture, suggests Better Homes and Gardens. Doing so also makes rearranging any room much easier. You should also place area rugs over your hardwood floors in high-traffic areas to prevent scratches.

3. Control the relative humidity in your home. Aim to keep it somewhere between 35 percent and 55 percent. This is important because too much moisture can warp and damage your beautiful hardwood floors.

If your hardwood flooring is beyond repair, contact JCB Interiors at (203) 327-0450. We offer an an enormous selection of solid hard wood and engineered hard wood in a huge assortment of styles and colors. Best of all, our hardwood flooring starts at just $3.87 per square foot.

How to Choose the Best Mattress For You

Buying a new mattress isn’t as easy as, say, picking out a t-shirt. It’s a big purchase that will affect your sleep habits and overall health. If you’re in the market for a new mattress, you might be feeling overwhelmed. That’s why we at JCB Interiors have created this quick guide on how to choose the best mattress for you.

Decide on a budget, size and type. First and foremost, you need to make a decision about how much you’re willing to spend. This will help you determine which brands and styles are within your budget. You also need to consider mattress size and type. This guide from the Better Sleep Council will help you narrow down your options when it comes to size. You can also refer to the Better Sleep Council for help choosing the right mattress type.

Find a mattress that supports your body in neutral position. It’s important for your spine has a nice curvature and that the rest of your body is supported in correct alignment. "If the mattress is too firm, it will push on those main pressure points and take you out of alignment,” Arya Nick Shamie, MD, associate professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center told WebMD. "If it's too soft, those pressure points won't be properly supported, so your whole body flops back." Both of these scenarios can lead to an achy morning.

Ask about an in-home trial period. Most big name retailers will give you up to two months to try out a new mattress in your home. If you don’t feel comfortable with your purchase, you should be able to return the mattress or exchange for a different one. Life Hacker suggests paying attention to the following during your trial period:
  • Are you waking up with more or less energy?
  • Do you feel any additional pain throughout the day in your back or sides?
  • When you get up, do you feel energized or grumpier than usual?
  • Have you noticed that you’re tossing and turning more frequently?
Here at JCB Interiors, we offer a variety of mattress brands including Serta, Simmons and Comfort Bedding. For more information on how to choose the best mattress for you, give us a call at (203) 327-0450 today! Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and follow us on Google+ and Twitter for more tips.

3 Guidelines for DIY Carpet Cleaning

While carpeting offers many benefits that wood and laminate flooring don't, resilience to spills and stains isn't one of them. Professional carpet cleaners can give your carpets a deep clean, but sometimes you might just want to spot treat with a do-it-yourself (DIY) solution. Below are three guidelines for DIY carpet cleaning:

1. Determine whether or not your carpet is colorfast. Before you begin to clean your carpet, you must pretest it to figure out if it's colorfast. According to Better Homes and Gardens, "Colorfast carpet will not bleed, fade, or change when you are cleaning it or removing stains. Whether or not it is colorfast may change the cleaning method or products you choose." Take the following steps:
  • Locate a carpet scrap or find an inconspicuous area (like the inside of your closet) to test on. Be sure to vacuum it clean.
  • Apply stain remover or cleaner to a clean cloth.
  • Place the cloth on top of the test carpet for about an hour. After, absorb the dampness with a dry white cloth.
  • If the white cloth seems to pick up some of the dyes from your carpet, then you don't want to use that specific cleaner or stain remover on the rest of your carpet.
  • Repeat until you find a cleaner that doesn't bleed.

2. Avoid getting the carpet too wet. If your carpet takes too long to dry, it may end up separating from its backing. Furthermore, a damp carpet could become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Your cleaning solution should take no longer than 24 hours to dry.

3. Implement a routine cleaning schedule. Vacuuming routinely will help prevent grit and grime from setting into your carpet. This will help you in the long run -- you'll find yourself needing to spot clean less frequently. Refer to "An Owner's Guide To Rug and Carpet Care" by Martha Stewart for recommendations by carpet type.

Still can't get your carpet as clean as you'd like? Perhaps it's time for a new carpet from JCB Interiors. Our prices start at just 88 cents per square foot! Read more about our huge selection of premium carpet and area rugs at our website.

The Benefits of Luxury Vinyl Planks

If hardwood flooring is out of your price range, but you love the look, perhaps you should explore luxury vinyl planks. Price point is just one of the many reasons that luxury vinyl plank flooring has become a popular option for homes. Let’s take a look at the benefits of luxury vinyl planks:

Affordable

Luxury vinyl planks are less expensive than hardwood floors. At JCB Interiors, our luxury vinyl planks cost less than you might think. Best of all, it mimics wood for much less than the real thing.

Easy to maintain

This type of flooring is also very simple to clean and easy to maintain. It’s designed to withstand the heavy foot traffic of a busy home. Clean by sweeping, dusting or vacuuming regularly. You can even mop it for a more thorough clean.

Less potential for water damage

While wood flooring certainly is beautiful, it can warp and swell when too much water is applied. That’s why luxury vinyl planks are the better choice for high-moisture areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Enjoy the look of wood without worrying about spills and splashes!

Rich colors and textures

You might be surprised by just how gorgeous luxury vinyl planks really are. You get all the things you love about hardwood flooring – the looks, the grain patterns and the natural wood colors. Plus, choose from features that allow you to create a unique style.

How to Choose the Right Carpet for Your Office

Buying commercial carpet for a business isn’t quite the same as choosing a carpet for your home. There are different considerations that are important to remember. For example, you want to make sure you’re choosing a carpet that will outlast heavy foot traffic. Let’s take a deeper look into how to choose the right carpet for your office.

Identify what’s important to you. Is foot traffic of utmost importance? Maybe you have a strict budget? Perhaps, first and foremost, you care about style? Whatever the case, figure out which item or items are most important as your first step.

Agree on a budget. Even if money isn’t necessarily the biggest issue for you, it’s important to set a budget. Determine how much you have to spend on your office’s new carpet. When making this decision, consider how long you want your carpet to last and look good for.

Consider fabric types. Carpets are made with varying types of fabric or “yarn.” Below are three types that work well for commercial settings:
  • Tufted
  • Nylon
  • Olefin
Measure precisely. Be sure that you have exact measurements of the space to be carpeted. Otherwise, you could end up purchasing an incorrect amount of carpet. If you’re unsure, always round up. It’s better to have more carpet than you need than not enough.

JCB Interiors offers a wide variety of commercial carpet that will last and look great in your business. We cover it all, from the boardroom to the break room, with brands and products that span the entire range of price and performance the marketplace demands. Call us today at (203) 327-0450 to learn more!

5 Tips for Getting Your Hardwood Floors to Sparkle

Today's hardwood floors are more durable and easy to maintain than ever before. If you've just updated your home with hard wood from JCB Interiors, you're probably hoping to keep them clean for as long as possible. Below are five tips for getting your hardwood floors to sparkle -- and stay that way.

1. Vacuum every day

Pass a vacuum or dust mop over your hardwood floors daily to prevent the buildup of dust, dirt and grime. Vacuuming ensures you won't damage the finish, allowing your wood floors to really shine. Readers Digest recommends using a brush attachment to pick up fine grit.

2. Avoid using water

Water can ruin your hardwood floor's finish and cause permanent stains. Don't let water sit on your wood floor for too long.

3. Find a good wood-cleaning product

For dirt and oil that can't be picked up by the vacuum, use a wood-cleaning product, and make sure to pay attention to instructions on how to dilute it. Dip a sponge or mop into the solution, and be sure to wring it out so it's just slightly damp to prevent water damage, advises Better Homes and Gardens.

4. Use tea

This might sound crazy, but The DIY Network actually advocates cleaning your hardwood floors with boiling water and two bags of tea. The acid within tea will get your floors to shine. Again, be sure to apply the tea with a damp -- not soaked -- cloth to avoid water damage.

5. Don't use straight ammonia

The Today Show urges homeowners to not apply ammonia, alkaline products or other harsh cleaners to hardwood floors. They could dull the finish, making your floor less shiny. These cleaners can also scratch the finish, creating an uneven look.

If your wood flooring is too far gone to clean, contact JCB Interiors at (203) 327-0450. We offer an an enormous selection of solid hard wood, and engineered hard wood in a huge assortment of styles and colors. Get in touch today!
