The Carpet and Allergies Connection
In the springtime, carpets tend to collect dust, pollen and other allergens that can cause flare-ups in your symptoms. If you're fed up with itchy eyes and nasal congestion, you may want to educate yourself on the carpet and allergies connection.
"Carpets accumulate dust and dirt in the amount of approximately 5-25 grams per square meter of surface area, depending on type of material, foot traffic, and other factors, which is a far greater extent than hard flooring," reports the National Center for Healthy Housing. If you or someone in your family suffers from allergies, you'll want to limit wall-to-wall carpeting in your home for this reason.
A recent study from Woolcock Institute Of Medical Research found that it's also difficult to remove certain allergens from carpeting. "Allergen avoidance measures that rely solely on vacuum cleaning are likely to be of limited success unless more rigorous cleaning than standard home vacuuming is performed," said Woolcock Researcher Jason Sercombe.
Now that we're clear on the carpet and allergies connection, let's talk about alternatives. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends using "hardwood, vinyl, linoleum tile, or slate instead of wall-to-wall carpeting." If you miss the warmth of a carpet beneath your feet, invest in small, washable area rugs.
To learn more about alternatives to carpeting, call JCB Interiors at (203) 327-0450. We offer hardwood floors, laminate, tile, vinyl and area rugs! Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for more tips.

3 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Floors
Winter's just about over, and if you're like us, you're already forming your spring cleaning checklist. Spotless floors should be at the top of your list! To help you get there, here are three spring cleaning tips for your floors:
1. Vacuum and shampoo carpets
You should be vacuuming daily, but we understand that's not always a realistic. As for shampooing, your best bet is to call in a professional. However, if you're looking for a DIY (do-it-yourself) approach, check out this guide from Apartment Therapy. (As a bonus, it uses only natural ingredients!)
2. Sweep and vacuum hardwood floors
Avoid taking a dripping mop to your beautiful wood floors. "...[It] can cause the boards to expand and splinter," warn the cleaning experts of Molly Maid. A thorough sweep and vacuum should be sufficient. If a deeper clean is necessary, look for a professional cleaner made specifically for hardwood floors.
3. Clean stained grout
It can be challenging to get tile floors to look clean if the grout is stained. Better Homes and Gardens recommends tackling the problem with a strong bleach solution (3/4 cup of bleach and 1 gallon of water) and a toothbrush. It may take a while, but it'll be worth it when your tiles are sparkling!
If your floors can't be saved this spring, call JCB Interiors. We've been selling furniture and flooring for more than 35 years.
Don't forget to connect with us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ for more tips.

Benefits of Wide Plank Flooring
If you're considering putting down hardwood floors in your home, you've got a lot options to choose from. JCB Interiors offers an enormous selection of solid hard wood, and engineered hard wood in a huge assortment of styles and colors.
Wide plank flooring has become more popular in recent years. Let's take a look at its benefits:
It can make a room look bigger
Updating a tiny room? Wide plank flooring can make it look larger! Because there are fewer seams with wide planks, they tend to make rooms look less busy. What a great way to make any room look bigger.
It draws out wood's natural beauty
Many types of woods have inherently intriguing features. With wide plank flooring, these details become significantly more visible. If you love the natural beauty of wood, then wider planks may be the right choice for you.
It's ideal for just about any style
Whether your space is contemporary or rustic, wide plank flooring fits the bill. You can even use area rugs to add warmth and softness. There's no limit to what you can do!
Sound like wide plank flooring is for you? Contact JCB Interiors at (203) 327-0450 to discuss its benefits in more detail. Connect with JCB Interiors on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter for more tips!

Carpeting Trends for 2015
Even if you don't consider yourself to be stylish, when it comes to installing new carpeting, you want to avoid choosing an outdated carpet fashion. Give your home a fresh look by familiarizing yourself with the latest and greatest in carpeting! Below are a few carpeting trends that are already big for 2015.
1. Step away from the beige
"Now, with numerous textures, patterns, and colors available, carpet is emerging as the focal point in some interior designs," reports HGTV. Even more traditional carpet styles can be made more interesting by adding unique colors. Consider opting for the "new neutrals" like soft green, pale yellow and hues of blue.
2. Look for soft textures
Combining a soft texture and layered colors helps make carpeting a design focus rather than a background. Berber carpeting from JCB Interiors comes in attractive earth tones and textures. It's also ideal for high-traffic areas.
3. Choose natural fibers
Wools and sisals have become more popular over the years. That's because they're eco-friendly and offer a more minimalist style. These types of carpets may cost more, but they tend to last longer and can even lead to better air quality.
What other carpeting trends do you think will be big in 2015? We'd love to hear your thoughts! Share your ideas with JCB Interiors on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.

Learn More About Linoleum Flooring
Although it's been an inexpensive and long-lasting flooring option for more than a century, the popularity of linoleum had begun to fade. Today, however, it's making a comeback. "With more and more homeowners now looking for 'green living' alternatives, linoleum is fast becoming a popular choice once again," reports Realtor.com. Let's learn more about linoleum flooring:
It's durable
One of the primary benefits of linoleum flooring is its durability. Linoleum can maintain its look and finish for more than 40 years when properly maintained. Because it's so long-lasting, this material can be used in a variety of spaces, from bathrooms and kitchens to hallways.
It's environmentally-friendly
Linoleum flooring is, perhaps surprisingly, one of the most eco-friendly flooring options on the market. The material is made from natural, renewable products. Therefore, it has a low impact onthe environment.
It's low-cost
Compared to some of today's most popular flooring options -- like hardwood and tile -- linoleum is far less expensive. Installation is easy, and therefore it's usually affordable as well. JCB Interiors' linoleum manufacturers include:

3 Bathroom Flooring Trends
As we round off the first month of the New Year, everyone seems to have the same question in mind: What will be trending in 2015? We at JCB Interiors like to stay ahead of the curve, so we're always keeping an eye out for the next big thing. Today, let's discuss three bathroom flooring trends that are about to explode:
1. Hardwood
Complementing white bathroom fixtures with hardwood floors creates a clean yet warm look. If hardwood flooring is outside of your budget, consider laminate. It mimics wood perfectly for a fraction of the price!
2. Ceramic tile
Brightly colored ceramic tiles can transform the look of your bathroom. JCB Interiors offers beautiful designs, including rustic, classy or even bright and loud. If you've got a busy family, you'll be happy to know that ceramic tile is also quite durable.
3. Area rugs
This year, bathrooms are starting to look less like bathrooms and more like the rest of the home. Many homeowners want art and furniture to be the focal point of their bathrooms, as opposed to the sink, toilet or shower. A unique and fashionable area rug helps achieve this goal.

Best Flooring Options for Homes with Pets
Knowing that pets can scratch up and dirty your floors may deter you from becoming a pet owner. But we're here to let you know that you can have it all -- new floors and furry friends! You just have to bear in mind that some flooring options are better suited for cats and dogs. Here are the best flooring options for homes with pets:.
1. Vinyl
For many, the words "vinyl flooring" conjure images of old-school peel-and-stick flooring. Today, however, vinyl is more like laminate. It's durable, affordable, and easy to clean. Perhaps most importantly, vinyl flooring simulates the beauty of natural material. Whether your pets spill their water, scratch with their nails or have an accident in the house, vinyl flooring will persevere!
2. Hardwood
Don't be discouraged by the naysayers. Hardwood floors are actually pet-friendly -- if you're up for a little maintenance. Trim your pets' nails regularly to avoid scratching, and keep an eye out for spills that could stain and warp the wood. Following these two guidelines should ensure your hardwood flooring stays safe.
3. Carpet
If you choose to carpet your home, you'll have one big advantage: not having to worry about scratches. However, keep in mind that it's more difficult to remove stains from carpeting. Choose durable carpet -- like berber or sisal -- for added peace of mind.

How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Your Carpeting
Still cleaning up after the holidays? We've all been there. Spills of all kinds -- from heavy foods to dark beverages -- are particularly tough to get 100 percent clean. Let's address one of the biggest offenders of all: How to remove red wine stains from your carpeting.
1. First it's important to soak up as much of the red wine as possible. This will prevent it from setting, and will make the cleaning process easier. Blot with an absorbent paper towel for best results.
2. Good Housekeeping recommends mixing one tablespoon of dish-washing detergent, one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of warm water for an effective cleaning solution. Apply a little at a time with a clean white cloth.
3. Sponge the affected area with cold water, and be sure to blot frequently with a dry towel until the stain disappears.
If you'd prefer a more natural approach, Reader's Digest suggests using salt:

Top 3 Carpets for Bedrooms
Choosing carpeting for a bedroom is a unique process. There are certain things you must consider -- like warmth and sound absorption -- that may not be as important for other rooms in your home. Below we'll discuss the top three carpets for bedrooms:
Wool
SF Gate recommends investing in wool carpeting for bedrooms, because it "has a soft, luxurious feel." This natural fiber is also durable, stain-resistant, and fire retardant. Wool carpets may be more expensive than alternatives, but initial costs are often offset by their durability and ease of care. JCB Interiors offers wool and wool-blend carpet at competitive prices.
Silk/wool blend
Another popular choice, according to HGTV, is a silk and wool blend. It's not only durable, but also quite beautiful! However, be careful how you clean this type of carpet. It can easily be damaged if you don't follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Synthetic
If silk and wool are out of your price range, synthetic materials -- like nylon -- are a good option. One benefit of synthetic carpets is that they do not attract as many insects. Synthetic carpeting is also easy to care for, making it ideal for children's bedrooms.

3 Tips for Caring for Hardwood Floors
Hardwood flooring is unique because it can't be mopped with water like most other floors can. So if you've recently invested in new hardwood floors, you might be wondering how to clean them without ruining them. Let's go over three tips for caring for hardwood floors:
1. Anderson Floors, a manufacturer for JCB Interiors, recommends sweeping and vacuuming regularly. Doing so will help remove dirt that builds up over time. It's important to remove the grit as often as possible, because, otherwise, it could damage the surface of your hardwood floors.
2. Prevent scuffs and marks by placing floor protectors underneath your furniture, suggests Better Homes and Gardens. Doing so also makes rearranging any room much easier. You should also place area rugs over your hardwood floors in high-traffic areas to prevent scratches.
3. Control the relative humidity in your home. Aim to keep it somewhere between 35 percent and 55 percent. This is important because too much moisture can warp and damage your beautiful hardwood floors.
If your hardwood flooring is beyond repair, contact JCB Interiors at (203) 327-0450. We offer an an enormous selection of solid hard wood and engineered hard wood in a huge assortment of styles and colors. Best of all, our hardwood flooring starts at just $3.87 per square foot.

How to Choose the Best Mattress For You
Buying a new mattress isn’t as easy as, say, picking out a t-shirt. It’s a big purchase that will affect your sleep habits and overall health. If you’re in the market for a new mattress, you might be feeling overwhelmed. That’s why we at JCB Interiors have created this quick guide on how to choose the best mattress for you.
Decide on a budget, size and type. First and foremost, you need to make a decision about how much you’re willing to spend. This will help you determine which brands and styles are within your budget. You also need to consider mattress size and type. This guide from the Better Sleep Council will help you narrow down your options when it comes to size. You can also refer to the Better Sleep Council for help choosing the right mattress type.
Find a mattress that supports your body in neutral position. It’s important for your spine has a nice curvature and that the rest of your body is supported in correct alignment. "If the mattress is too firm, it will push on those main pressure points and take you out of alignment,” Arya Nick Shamie, MD, associate professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center told WebMD. "If it's too soft, those pressure points won't be properly supported, so your whole body flops back." Both of these scenarios can lead to an achy morning.
Ask about an in-home trial period. Most big name retailers will give you up to two months to try out a new mattress in your home. If you don’t feel comfortable with your purchase, you should be able to return the mattress or exchange for a different one. Life Hacker suggests paying attention to the following during your trial period:

3 Guidelines for DIY Carpet Cleaning
While carpeting offers many benefits that wood and laminate flooring don't, resilience to spills and stains isn't one of them. Professional carpet cleaners can give your carpets a deep clean, but sometimes you might just want to spot treat with a do-it-yourself (DIY) solution. Below are three guidelines for DIY carpet cleaning:
1. Determine whether or not your carpet is colorfast. Before you begin to clean your carpet, you must pretest it to figure out if it's colorfast. According to Better Homes and Gardens, "Colorfast carpet will not bleed, fade, or change when you are cleaning it or removing stains. Whether or not it is colorfast may change the cleaning method or products you choose." Take the following steps:
- Locate a carpet scrap or find an inconspicuous area (like the inside of your closet) to test on. Be sure to vacuum it clean.
- Apply stain remover or cleaner to a clean cloth.
- Place the cloth on top of the test carpet for about an hour. After, absorb the dampness with a dry white cloth.
- If the white cloth seems to pick up some of the dyes from your carpet, then you don't want to use that specific cleaner or stain remover on the rest of your carpet.
- Repeat until you find a cleaner that doesn't bleed.
2. Avoid getting the carpet too wet. If your carpet takes too long to dry, it may end up separating from its backing. Furthermore, a damp carpet could become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Your cleaning solution should take no longer than 24 hours to dry.
3. Implement a routine cleaning schedule. Vacuuming routinely will help prevent grit and grime from setting into your carpet. This will help you in the long run -- you'll find yourself needing to spot clean less frequently. Refer to "An Owner's Guide To Rug and Carpet Care" by Martha Stewart for recommendations by carpet type.
